„Kunst! Schaffen?“ – Portraits of the Artists

For “Kunst! Schaffen?”, the Department for Public Appearances asked Munich artists about their experiences, suggestions, expectations of and visions for Munich as an art city. About 90 artists responded, offering personal insights into their situation. Responses appear in the vitrine as a multi-layered tapestry consisting of texts, drawings, portraits and statement banners. They paint a contradictory picture of Munich as an “art city”: on the one hand, it is “described” as a place of inspiration, full of potential sources of funding and institutions; on the other, as stiflingly quiet, marked by a lack of space and counterculture.

The Department for Public Appearances has been realising artistic projects in public spaces since 1995. Their aim is to stimulate discussion and encourage participation in political and social processes.
